Deployment of an IoT System for Adaptive In-Situ Soundscape Augmentation

Soundscape augmentation is an emerging approach for noise mitigation by introducing additionalsounds known as "maskers" to increase indices like acoustic comfort. Traditionally, the choice of maskers oftenpredicated on expert guidance or post-hoc analysis which can be time-consuming and sometimesarbitrary. Moreover, this often results in a static set that are inflexible dynamicnature real-world environments. Overcoming inflexibility traditional soundscapeaugmentation two-fold. First, given snapshot soundscape, system must able select anoptimal masker without human supervision. Second, also react changesin environment with near real-time latency. In work, we harness combinedprowess cloud computing internet-of-things (IoT) allow in-situ listening playback usingmicrocontrollers while delegating computationally expensive inference tasks cloud. Inparticular, serverless architecture was used inference, ensuring latencyand scalability need provision resources. A working prototype systemis currently being deployed public area experiencing high traffic noise, well undergoingpublic evaluation future improvements.
